Back in 1996, Palm released the Pilot 1000 with the help of U.S. Robotics, this device was the first of its kind an paved the way to other Palm devices. Then in 1999 U.S. Robotics (thus Palm) was acquired by 3com and they released the Palm V and Palm IIIx organizers. Then in 1998, unsatisfied with the direction of Palm under 3Com, the Palm Computing, Inc. founders left Palm and formed Handspring. The following year (1999) they released the Handspring Visor. Handspring then continued to release many devices such as the Treo 180 (in 2002). After Palm left 3Com in 2000 and merged with Handspring in 2003 they formed palmOne, Inc. that later became Palm Inc. in 2005. Then (in a shock to some people) in 2006, Palm, Inc. released the Palm Treo 700w, the first Treo smartphone to run on Windows Mobile instead of the Palm OS platform. Now in 2009, we see the Palm Pre an completely new (multi-tasking) operating system and hardware device to compete with the iPhone and Blackberry devices.
