With the recent preview of third-party applications on the Palm Pre, we are seeing how they have already overcome some of the limitations inherent to the Apple iPhone.

The Pandora Internet radio app demo shows how the Pre will allow background task, thus allowing users to do other things while Pandora radio plays. Not only does the Pandora application run in the background but it also hooks into the always-on notification bar to let listeners approve or dismiss songs without having to even switch active tasks.

Next up, is the ability to allow emulation of older Palm applications at full speed of other native applications.

And finally, there are other additions built into the Pre platform that allow communication between applications and access to the contacts sub-system.

This is really exciting news. I sure hope that developers implement these features (when needed) on as many applications as possible, just like Pandora and Fandango have done.
